Minimally invasive treatment for kidney cysts causing pain, infection, or obstruction.
Book An AppointmentMost kidney cysts do not require surgical treatment. They are often found incidentally and cause no symptoms. However, if a cyst is causing complications such as pain, infection, or obstruction of urine drainage, treatment may be necessary.
The first option is usually percutaneous drainage, where the cyst is drained using a thin needle inserted through the skin under ultrasound guidance. If this approach does not resolve the problem, a laparoscopic drainage may be recommended.
During a laparoscopic procedure, one 1.5 cm incision is made for the laparoscope, and two 0.5 cm incisions are made for the surgical instruments in the flank area. This compares to a 15 to 20 cm incision in open surgery. Part of the cyst wall is removed during the procedure to reduce the chance of the cyst refilling with fluid.
